Job Exploration: Tips and Tricks

Most people, when they start thinking about their future careers, start with the question "what do I enjoy?" And while that is a key part of the process, the world is full of so many options and opportunities that it can be overwhelming.

When I started thinking of that, a mentor gave me a great prompting question...

What do you HATE?

Wait, really? Yes! Start with job fields you know that you'd never get paid enough to actually do.

It is best to start in big general strokes, and then get more specific afterwards.

The following groups are called "Career Clusters", and are common groupings of careers and job fields.

Agriculture, food and natural resources

Architecture and construction

Arts, A/V technology and communications

Business management and administration

Education and training

Finance

Government and public administration

Health science

Hospitality and tourism

Human services

Information technology

Law, public safety, corrections and security

Manufacturing

Marketing

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics

Transportation, distribution and logistics

What do you ENJOY?

Calle's Experience

For me, this was the medical field. While helping people was greatly appealing to me, I knew I was bad at long-term memorization and as cool as science was, it was not my strong suit.

When I looked more into it, I also realized the long hours and intense environment would outweigh the potential goodness I could bring about.
